Joughin Vineyard

Andy Joughin worked many years as Vineyard Manager for Santa Barbara Winery. He had a small home vineyard in Los Olivos, and was looking to plant varietals of niche value that matched the terroir. Winemaker Bruce McGuire recommended a few Italian selections. One was Primitivo, which we are now privileged to produce. This and other small lots the Joughin Vineyard harvests provided us with the incentive to offer special bottlings of interesting and unusual wines.

Tasting Notes
The 2017 Primitivo is rich, opaque purple with a nose of blackberry jam, ripe plum and rich earth. Well-developed flavors of stewed black fruit, balsamic and dark chocolate round out the palate. Dull-bodied with bold tannins, decanting is recommended.

Winemaker Notes
2017 was an interesting vintage: we picked Primitivo last of all our grapes, for the first time ever. We did not harvest until November, and it was worth the wait. Long, slow development yields great complexity, and the result is our 2017 Primitivo.
