2018 Primitivo
Joughin Vineyard

Andy Joughin worked many years as Vineyard Manager for Santa Barbara Winery. He had a small home vineyard in Los Olivos, and was looking to plant varietals of niche value that matched the terroir. Winemaker Bruce McGuire recommended a few Italian selections. One was Primitivo, which we are now privileged to produce. This and other small lots the Joughin Vineyard harvests provided us with the incentive to offer special bottlings of interesting and unusual wines.

Tasting Notes
The 2018 Primitivo is rich, opaque purple with a nose of blackberry jam, ripe plum and rich earth. Well-developed flavors of stewed black fruit, balsamic and dark chocolate round out the palate. Full-bodied with bold tannins, decanting is recommended.
Vineyard Notes
100% Joughin Vineyard; Santa Ynez Valley AVA
Production Notes
6 barrel lot; 16.6% new French oak; 18 months in barrel; 50 day maceration on the skins 154 cases produced
Winemaker Notes
Primitivo is from Puglia in Southern Italy. Primitivo and Zinfandel are the same variety originally from Croatia where it is known as Tribidrag. Primitivo is tougher skinned than Zinfandel that I have worked with and more tannic. The flavors are red and black bramble berries. Anise and cracked black pepper are on the finish.
Food Pairing Notes
Italian meat sauces; sausage with fennel; roast lamb
